Monday Evening – Second Night Chanukah with the Toldos Aharon Rebbe

December 24, 2019

As one of the largest Chasidishe court in Jerusalem, the nightly candle lighting of the Toldos Aharon Rebbe is a leading attraction for Chasidim and visitors. On this night, the Beis Medrash was closed to the general public with guards at the door only allowing access to those select few holding a pass. The passes were provided to orphaned families by Tov V’chesed in conjunction with Sha’arei Rachmim, an organization serving widows and orphans within the Toldos Aharon community.

The main shul hosted hundreds of widowed men and orphaned boys while the women’s section was packed with widowed woman and orphaned girls. The Rebbe lit the Menorah in an uplifting ceremony and a serious mood permeated the Beis Medrash. The atmosphere soon turned festive as the popular musician R’ Avreimy Moskowitz played lively music accompanied by a young soloist and other singers.
The men all joined in a joyful dance and the Rebbe danced in a circle with the young boys, making sure to hold the hand of each boy for awhile. As the smiles spread on their faces, the mothers shed a tear witnessing their children in a moment of bliss. The Rebbe then handed out Chanukah gelt to each boy and accepted kvitlech where the children shared all their personal needs for tefilos.

Orphan’s of Project Buneinu Celebrated the First Day of Chanukah with the Vizhnitz-Yerushalayim Rebbe

December 23, 2019

Monday, First Day of Chanukah

Tov V’chesed’s Buneinu program took hundreds of Jerusalem boys to visit the Rebbe of Vizhnitz-Yerushalayim. The Rebbe, who assumed the mantle of leadership in recent years, is renowned for his personable nature and the warmth he shows to all visitors.

The Rebbe spoke to the boys about his experience as a leading liaison for cholei Yisroel in NYC hospitals. He shared how he has stood by the side of children as their parents leave this world and how this has helped him learn to understand their predicament and provide chizuk for these broken young boys. The boys heard moving divrei chizzuk from the Rebbe, and then passed by the Rebbe one by one to receive coins and a personal, warm bracha.

The Satmar Rebbe’s Visit to Buneinu Leaves All Attendees Uplifted and Inspired.

November 24, 2019

Though the Satmar Rebbe, Reb Zalmen Leib Teitelbaum Shlit”a’s visit to Eretz Yisroel was short and his itinerary filled to capacity he made time to visit the Buneinu center and bring chizzuk to its members.

The Rebbe was welcomed by hundreds of orphans as well as Buneinu’s leadership; R’ Yakov Eliezer Shisha and R’ Mayer Aker.

Both R’ Shisha and R’ Aker outlined in great detail the pain and anguish that these orphaned children go through and how Buneinu steps in to ease their burden. Some of the children who benefit from project Buneinu are Satmar Chassidim and the Rebbe was touched by the kindness and benevolent assistance which Buneinu provides for them.

Reb Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum Shlit”a, son of the Satmar Rebbe, also came for the visit. It was especially meaningful since he is personally involved and in touch with Buneinu staff throughout the year.

Also present at the event was Reb Duvid Levy. Reb Duvid comes to the Buneinu center each week to take care of especially difficult cases and questions which came up over the week. He also talks to the chassanim and prepares them for married life. The Satmar Rebbe was greatly impressed and inspired when Reb Duvid told him about the great impression Buneinu has on the orphaned children.

Also on the program was a siyum on the completion of ‘shishu sidrai mishna’ by one of the yesomim.

The climax was when kaddish was recited in unison by all the young orphans. There wasn’t a dry eye as the children said kaddish in honor of their late parents.

The Rebbe didn’t leave before giving over poignant words of chizzuk and warm wishes as well as personally shaking the hand of each child.

Each child received a beautiful Tehillim as a keepsake.

The memories, warm words of chizzuk and heartfelt wishes will surely accompany each child through the long and harsh winter.

200 Yesomos Inspired by the Satmar Rebbitzen’s Visit to the Bnoseinu Center

November 22, 2019

Yerushalayim. Over two hundred girls from around Eretz Yisroel were touched by the beautiful event which took place Thursday, November 21. The event was in the honor of the ‘Mamed Kriyas Sheim’ (name giving) for the newly purchased Bnoseinu center.

Recently, a special friend of Tov V’Chesed sponsored the down payment of the new center. The center was named “Ohel Chaya” in honor of his late mother, Chaya bas Avrohom Dov A”H.

The Satmar Rebbitzen’s attendance punctuated the event and left an unbelievable impression on the orphaned girls.

The Rebbetzin was greeted my shining faces and received a warm welcome. Rebbetzin Shisha, wife of Tov V’Chesed’s founder and director, outlined Bnoseinu’s mission and all it does for these broken orphans.

Rebbetzin Aker spoke at the event and described the pain that these yesomos go through and how Bnoseinu steps in to ease their burden.

Although the Satmar Rebbitzen’s visit was scheduled to take but a couple of minutes, she had a difficult time parting and stood up to give the girls chizzuk and warm wishes. She also handed each girl a beautiful Tehillim as a keepsake.

We are all looking forward to hosting a grand ‘Chanukas Habayis’ for the new Bnoseinu Center in the near future.

Over 400 Yesomim Take Part in Massive Shabbos Buneinu in Arad, Israel

November 15, 2019

Arad, Israel – It was a sight to behold. In a large room sat over 400 boys of all ages, singing and laughing together like one big happy family. But this wasn’t a regular family. This was HKB”H’s family of orphaned children who came together for a Shabbos retreat in the beautiful desert town of Arad, in the mountains near the Dead Sea.

Buneinu is a highly acclaimed program which assists orphaned boys with all their emotional and material needs throughout the year. This mission is led by the mechanech R’ Mayer Aker Shlit”a and is a sub division of the renowned Tov V’Chesed organization, led by R’ Yaakov Eliezer Shisha Shlit”a.

Buneinu’s leading project is undoubtedly the Buneinu houses where orphaned boys of all ages are free to come by after school, on weekends, during bein hazmanim and more for a quick bite, a listening ear and to bask in the warmth and acceptance. The organization also employs dozens of mentors, counselors and therapists. Every child who is part of the program has a designated mentor with whom he can develop a close connection and someone he can always count on.

The highlight of the year is undoubtedly the annual Buneinu Shabbaton where the hundreds of boys and young bachurim who are part of Buneinu’s year-round efforts gather for a 48 hour getaway. It’s a time when they can leave all their troubles behind and spend an uplifting and exciting weekend in the company of other boys who share their predicament. These Shabbatons have earned rave reviews from all participants and despite the high costs involved, R’ Shisha and his team realize its vital importance and continue hosting the annual event.

This year’s Shabbaton was attended by 437 boys. If the number 437 seems overly specific, that’s because it is. Originally, only 435 registrants were expected to join but on Friday morning, as the buses prepared to leave their points of origin throughout Israel, R’ Shisha received a phone call from a prominent Rav who told him that he’s allowing two boys who were in the week of shiva after losing their mother to take part in the Shabbos. Accommodations were quickly arranged so that these two broken boys could participate.

Over the years, Buneinu leadership realized that the children were far more amendable to opening up about their experiences and what is on their mind when they find themselves away from their day-to-day environment, and in a warm and inviting atmosphere. To that end, Buneinu enlisted around 150 staff members, therapist, psychologists and educators to take part in the Shabbos and be there for the children at all times.

The Shabbaton boasted nonstop fun, excitement and inspiration. All throughout the getaway, the boys were treated like royal children of Hashem. Upon their arrival on Friday afternoon, all children were greeted at the host hotel by R’ Shisha and R’ Aker and Buneinu staff led them to their designated rooms which were prepared in advance with food, reading material, gifts and more.

The Shabbos began with outdoor singing and the festivities were then taken inside where the bucherim and boys davened separately. The dancing at Friday night’s davening was joyous and uplifting, with true smiles that aren’t seen often on many of the participants’ faces. The Shabbos meals and farbrengens included singing and dancing that carried for hours.

The Shalosh Seudos was a highlight since R’ Mayer Aker spoke with the boys and implored them to stay strong and have emunah despite their suffering. R’ Aker tearfully shared that since Rosh Hashana, Buneinu has had to assist 83 new yesomim who are going through the devastation of losing a parent. Through cries and sobs, mixed with a yearning for better days the boys sang uplifting, slow songs; songs of chizuk, emunah, and tefillah.

As in years prior, the Motzei Shabbos Melaveh Malka punctuated an incredible weekend as the children enjoyed a lavish meal, premier entertainment, and song and dance that lasted until the sun came up. During the melava malka, a siyum mishanyis was held for the shisha sidrei mishna learned by Buneinu boys throughout the year. There was not a dry eye in the room as hundreds of sweet voices said Kaddish in unison after their departed parent. The mood then turned more joyful as song and dance filled the hall. Some of Israel’s leading singer and performers traveled to Arad to provide the children with a night to remember.

The melava malka also celebrated Buneinu’s recent opening of a new center in Beni Brak and the impending launch of Buneinu in Beit Shemesh. Late at night, exhausted physically but rejuvenated emotionally, the children were escorted back to their buses and received a beautiful souvenir to take back home as a reminder of the wonderful weekend. The smiles on the faces of the children shared the clear and unmistakable message that the positive impact of the Shabbos will last a long time.

Preparations Underway for the Grand Buneinu Shabbaton

November 14, 2019

Hundreds of orphans around Eretz Yisroel are counting the days and looking forward to the grand Buneinu Shabbaton.

The Shabbaton is designed to give the boys a few crucial days of chizuk and support. Project Buneinu provides comprehensive emotional and material support to children who have unfortunately experienced the passing of a parent. The emotional turmoil that befalls these families leaves tremendous stress on the young children who often suffer in silence. Project Buneinu assists these boys with all their needs so that they can grow up as healthy and happy men.

Putting together such a shabbos costs us close to $80,000! This enormous sum is gathered from generous sponsors who feel privileged to be part of this great endeavor.

The children will be hosted in a beautiful and spacious hotel. They will enjoy hearty meals, great entertainment, uplifting speeches, and spend time in the company of those who understand them best.

We look forward to giving these orphaned children a shabbos that they will remember and draw chizzuk from throughout the cold and harsh winter.

Successful Tishrei Food Distribution to Thousands of Families in Need

October 10, 2019

In what has become Israel’s main food drive, this year’s distribution by Tov V’Chesed saw its greatest effort to date as staff and volunteers wrapped up the season by delivering close to 2,000,000 pounds of food items to 37,191 children of poor and impoverished families.

The costs of this initiative were covered by the generous donations made by Jewish communities around the world. In the weeks leading up to the distribution, tens of thousands of mailings were sent out to Tov V’Chesed supporters. The tremendous response enabled the organization’s largest effort to date.

This year, the organization set out on a mission to assist every family that reaches out for support. For years, the list of requesting families grew longer and longer and the organization’s leadership was unable to meet the demand. Rabbi Shisha shared that this feeling would gnaw at him throughout the uplifting Yom Tov days. This year, he was determined to see to it that no hungry child is left behind.

To that end, Tov V’Chesed significantly expanded its fundraising and logistics operations. A larger warehouse space was rented, more volunteers were enlisted to assist with packaging and delivering, and more effort was put into the fundraising operations. The results speak for themselves as thousands of families all over the holy land each received a delivery of 6-8 large boxes containing over 40 different food items. As the food distribution wrapped up, it was clear that Klal Yisroel came together and prepared for the new year the right way, and brought Simchas Yom Tov to thousands of destitute families.

Thanks for your assistance and continuous support!

Preparations Underway for theTov V’Chesed Succos Food Distribution

September 6, 2019

In what is quickly becoming a staple of each Yom Tov season, we’re once again readying for a food distribution which will take place before this Succos.

Enabled by the support of kind people like you around the world, our food distributions are among the fastest growing chesed endeavors in the Jewish community. One of the unique aspects of these food drives is the dignified manner in which each recipient is treated. Instead of families carrying food through the streets while eager photographers snap photos, these food packages are delivered to each family with discretion and respect.

While Succos is still over a month away, the efforts are already well underway to ensure the success of this undertaking. The first deliveries are already arriving in our designated warehouse and we’re about to start assembling the packages. The month of Tishrei places incredible hardship on families struggling to make ends meet and this food assistance is often their only chance to be part of the Yom Tov festivities with joy. Single parents and orphaned children count on us to ensure that they don’t go to sleep hungry during the holidays.

We know that Klal Yisrael with support our efforts by donating generously to the Tishrei campaign. As Jews around the world prepare for a festive month, we will all get together and ensure that this year Yom Tov is experienced with true simchas Yom Tov by all.

“A Tremendous Thank You for Everything!” Words of Appreciation from an Orphaned Chosson

August 27, 2019

Letters arrive to the inbox of Tov V’chesed all the time. Widows express appreciation for their food packages, children thank for the wonderful outings provided by Buneinu/Bnoseinu, chassanim/kallahs thank the Simcha Fund for enabling them to get married with dignity.

This letter caught our eyes and melted our hearts. The chosson has been through many hardships in his young life and was extremely dependent on Tov V’chesed’s assistance. His four words “A Tremendous Thank You for Everything!” gave us the encouragement to continue our holy work.
